When You Lose A Baby (And Be Back Soon!)

Well ya'll....life is slowing resuming it's normal self.

By the way....what is normal anymore?

I am spending this week still resting some, but mostly catching up on household must-do's, schooling, Etsy orders, and searching for answers and reasons for Jonathan's and Asher's death. (I am slowly putting pieces of the puzzle together, which I will share with you soon.)

But starting next week, I'll be back to blogging regularly.

It may not be every day...but close.

I miss you guys!

Until then, I will leave you with a few words from one awesome mama.

When You Lose A Baby

You don’t know what to expect.

People surround you. For a couple of weeks. Making sure you are not going to kill yourself, refuse to get out of bed, or start rocking a baby doll like the crazy lady they heard about from a friend.

You get lots of sympathy cards, clearly written and designed to be sent to console a daughter losing her father. Not the other way around.

You get free baby formula in the mail. For months and months and months.

And free baby magazines. And free baby coupons.

You secretly envy every pregnant woman. But not without a tinge of guilt, because you know all too well that she might be one in four- expecting her rainbow child.

It seems like the whole world is expecting a baby.

You have baby stuff around your home. Because you never imagined you wouldn’t need it.

You feel jarred. In the grocery store. At a birthday party. At the dinner table. At Christmas. Driving.

The baby you never knew, but lost changes every part of your life. Every. single. part.
Forever.

You see baby clothes and it brings tears to your eyes.

You get sick and tired of crying. You never knew it was possible to cry this much.

You find yourself angry at God. Angry at yourself. Just angry.

You sware you can feel them kick but they’re gone. They call them phantom kicks. I call them painful, all kinds of painful. But sweet too.

You know, or you have a strong feeling of knowing what your child would have looked like, and been like. You see a child in the store, or on the street. Their hair color, dimples, smile, their personality and suddenly you are reminded of your child. You miss your child even more, if that’s even possible.

Your Babies R’ Us Registry is still active. There is no delete button on their site. The babies r’ us people don’t make a dime on people like us. Why bother right? You have to call them, plead with them to remove your freaking’ registry, because there will be no baby shower. There is an awkward silence. There is sadness. There will be no baby.

You get hospital bills about 3-4 months after you buried your child. You have to pay for the baby you delivered but didn’t bring home.

You find that moment of happiness in life for the first time, but the guilt swallows it up almost immediately.

You remember the size of the casket. The size of the plot. The face of the funeral director. The expression of those that attended the funeral. The feeling of raw pain, like your chest has literally been ripped open.

Somehow you convince yourself that you deserve happiness. Because you really do. But in the happiest, purest moment, there is still that hole that only they were meant to fill.

People compare your pain to their own pain. The loss of their grandmother, husband, their failed marriage, rebellious teenagers. Somehow this comparing leaves you stranded. If they can compare their pain of a situation to the loss of your BABY, they will likely never get it. Babies are not supposed to die. End of story.

You lost a dream. And it almost feels like you imagined their entire existence up. Their name becomes a distant memory on the lips of others.

There is awkwardness when you talk about your child in a crowd. No one knows whether to cry, walk away or pretend you never brought him or her up.

You lose friends. You find new ones.

You can’t believe that women have actually survived this and you never knew about it. Not really, anyway.

You would do anything for another minute with your child.

You cry when others bring up your child, not so much because it hurts but more so because it such a precious and rare gift.

You long for the rewind button, even after many many instances of acceptance.

You want to know what went wrong, and why…

You find a new appreciation for moments in life that make you laugh… you laugh harder and love stronger.

You know that you can die bitter, or die thankful. There is no in between.

You never ever, EVER get over your child. The one you hoped for, prayed for, carried and loved for the weeks and months they were with you.

You learn to live with the pain.

You are better for having known them at all.

I have been asked to walk this road again.

The road of child loss.

Five months ago, God saw it fit to take home our son, our 8th child, at 20 weeks in the womb.
Just last week, He saw it fit again to allow heartbreak into our family.

Our Rainbow Bear.

This baby was supposed to be our rainbow...our happiness and blessing after the storm of losing sweet Jonathan.

And He was.

From day one of finding out we had been given another child by our Lord , my heart was cautious, and well.....just plain old afraid.
I was so scared of losing this baby too. I didn't have peace that everything would be ok, but chalked it up to lingering fears from the recent loss of our last child.
I drowned myself in love for this baby, knowing how precious life is and knowing he or she could be taken at any moment...but praying constantly that they wouldn't.
I will never regret those moments.

Because I was right.

All seemed to be going well with this little one, and the pregnancy chugged along. A dear friend of mine even found a rainbow sock monkey for my rainbow baby's first stuffed animal. I loved it! But the first thought that popped in my mind when she gave it to me was "This will fit perfectly in the memory box when I bury him."
Don't ask me why.
It seemed so negative at the time.

At 15 and 1/2 weeks my doppler finally arrived in the mail. I excitedly searched for the heartbeat, but couldn't find it.
I searched for hours at a time, for days.
Everyone kept saying not to worry. It's hard to find with the cheaper dopplers.
I tried not to panic. But I just didn't have peace.
Then the spotting started. Hardly anything, but enough in my mind to know something wasn't right.
Again, everyone kept saying it happens, don't stress it. Everything was probably fine. I wanted to believe that...but deep down, I think I knew God was preparing me for heartbreak.
The dreams started. Nightmares really....going to ultrasounds and finding nothing. Birthing my tiny dead child.
It was terrible.

I started noticing my pregnancy symptoms didn't feel as strong. I didn't feel as gaggy. Nor were the cravings as intense. And not really having to wake up at night to use the bathroom? Yeah, totally weird. I thought maybe I was just having a normal second trimester like most people...which, for me, was not normal. Maybe....
But I knew.
I hoped and prayed I was wrong.
But I knew.

At 16 and 1/2 weeks, I went to see my midwife while Matthew was home with the children. The whole one hour drive to her house, I had the radio on, and for some "reason" the station was playing song after song about suffering and heartbreak for God's glory. Pretty much all of the music that I turned to after Jonathan's death. Odd. I knew it was the Lord speaking, and preparing me. I begged him through tears to please let me be wrong, and take this cup away from me...again.

I tried to trust Him...hoped that he would not drag me through this path yet another time. But I knew His ways are not our ways. And it might be exactly what He was asking me to do.
Seeing my dear Joselle was bitter sweet. We've been through so much together.
We prayed before we checked for the heartbeat, first thing. Even though we didn't say it, we both expected the same answer.
And we were right.

There was no heartbeat.

My baby was gone.
I would have to bury another child.

My heart was broken.

On the way home I screamed out to God. Why? Why must I do this again? Haven't I been through enough in the past 6 months to last me a lifetime? Jonathan hasn't even been in the ground long enough to have his tombstone laid, and yet another baby must come into my arms silent.
God heard plenty of my hissy fits that day. Fortunately, He isn't intimidated by my whining, nor the fact that I told Him He was not my best friend at that moment.

But despite all of that, mentally and emotionally I thanked Him for helping the hurt by preparing my heart for all of this the previous 2 weeks.
For that, I am ever grateful. It made the pain seem more.....bearable?
But still, it didn't take away the utter despair....

On Friday the 20th, I walked into the doctor's office. The same OB who has also been with me through so much. The cold wind was blowing and the snow was falling beautifully through the sparkling sunlight. I realized then it was 5 months to the day of my sweet Jonathan's birth.
And here I was preparing to deliver another sleeping baby.

“The Lord gave, the Lord hath taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord.” (Job 1:21)

The doctor searched with his ultrasound.
De ja vu.
No heartbeat.
No movement.
Just a tiny little baby, all snuggled up tight inside my womb. A miniature version of the picture I saw on the screen 5 ~~short~~ long months ago.
It appeared the baby stopped growing around 12ish weeks from a placental clot/abruption, but the demise seemed more recent....just like Jonathan. although he was several weeks farther along.
Did I want to do a D&C?
Heck no.
I want to bury my baby.
To birth him or her with dignity.
To hold with love.
To see their sweet face.
It's the least I could do.
So we waited.
The doctor gave me 1 week to deliver, before we needed to consider the "options".
Sorry buddy. There were no options. I needed to see my child.
Since I was already spotting for the past week, and cramping away on my own, I had confidence that it would all happen.
I just didn't know when.

So home I went, and started the herbs. Bitterly disgusting yarrow and wormwood became my constant companion, in hopes to stimulate my uterus. Because whether they are dead in the womb at 16 weeks, or squirmy and kicking at 42 weeks, my body does NOT like to give up it's babies. (It just recently forgot how to keep them alive....)
Days went by and no changes. I crocheted a tiny blanket to wrap my child in. The children and I went out to buy a memory box that matches Jonathan's, and a tiny little coffin for burial.
We were ready.
But my body wasn't.

And then my dear Melissa friend brought me over "the magic peanut butter cups". We joked that maybe those yummy treats would be the key to putting me into labor.
And guess what happened 1 hour after I nibbled on a few?
The contractions started.
Real contractions.
Every 2 minutes, albeit short, but definitely strong enough to focus and breath through.
From 6 pm until 3 am, I battled not tensing through them. Emotionally, I couldn't, even though they were bearable.
I knew the end was near.

But I didn't want it.
After tossing and turning in bed for hours, I finally took an ibuprofen in hopes to relax. And as I lay there and dozed off, I noticed it worked.
But then I woke up enough to realize the contractions had stopped completely.
And I was soaking in blood.
I woke up Matthew, and stripped down in the shower.
Nothing. Just lots of blood. No baby.
And then, like Jonathan's labor, everything stopped.

Great.
I prayed it would start back up as I climbed in bed, but unfortunately I fell fast asleep and woke up bright and early. And still pregnant.

Wednesday, the 25th
I worked through my day, staying on my feet, drinking my herbs, waiting for something to kick back on. But all was silent.
So after dinner around 5 pm, I decided I would go take a nice relaxing bubble bath while everyone cleaned up downstairs. Maybe it would be the key....something had to get this going again.
I grabbed a book, a nice fluffy towel, and prayed as I walked into the bathroom.
"Lord, please let this all be over soon."
I went to use the restroom, and a few seconds later, I felt something huge slip down. No warning. No cramps. Just there.
Suddenly, a large, water-filled sack was bulging from me. I was afraid to move.

Now, because I was expecting to just go and take a soak in the tub, I had closed the door and the children and hubby were downstairs (loudly I might add) cleaning up and playing ball. I yelled, and screamed, and stomped on the floor the best I could to get someone's attention.
Finally, Matt figured out I was calling for him and came rushing up.
"Baby. Right here. Grab the cayenne."
As he dosed me with a dropperful of cayenne tincture under my tongue (a precautionary for hemorrhage we had bought the day before), I was able to finish pushing. Matthew was still taking it all in, asking if I had any warning. I shook my head no, then started hearing the blood trickling into the toilet....like someone forgot to turn the sink faucet all the way off. I looked down to see a steady stream of blood pouring out.
He yelled at the children to stay downstairs and pray, and grabbed the phone to call my midwife.
She had me check the sack to make sure everything was there, which appeared to be. I noticed how large this fluid filled amniotic sack was, like the size of both of my hands together, and was in awe at seeing my baby floating around inside.
But there was no time for that right then.

With Joselle on the phone, Matt practically dragged me into bed, and we put my hips and legs under a million pillows to try and slow the bloodflow. Every 10 minutes I was given a dropperful of cayenne to try and clot my blood until my body would take over.
Feeling the blood still gushing, I was trying my best not to panic. But I felt peace...paranoid and cautious...but peace none the less, that I would be ok.
We prayed, we filled me with orange juice and chlorophyll, we continued the cayenne (oh my poor tongue), and kept talking with Joselle. Should we transfer? Maybe...but I was afraid moving me would make the blood loss worse.
After over an hour, 2 big towels, and several postpartum pads, I passed 3 softball sized clots. And the bleeding finally slowed.
We were out of the woods.
I was pale and weak.
But safe.
On strict bed rest orders, I remained there that night, and the next day.
I spent hours that night awake, gazing next to my bed at the clothes basket with my baby still safely tucked in the sack...praying. Taking it all in. I hated waiting to see him or her, but I wasn't allowed up until the next morning, only long enough to take a shower.
But as soon as we woke up, Matt helped me to the tub, where I opened the baby's sack with scissors.
As the water rushed out, and my little angel appeared, I did everything to choke back the tears.

Yet I smiled.

My sweet little one.

I snipped the tiny umbilical cord, and gently lifted my baby out into the palm of my hand.
A perfect fit.
I marveled over the itty bitty fingers and toes, even the perfect teensy fingernails, and then checked....yup. Just as I thought. Every distinctive bit of tiny little manhood.

Asher....happiness and blessing. Brennan....teardrop and sorrow.
A fitting name for our precious little son.

I took him back in bed with me, and laid him on his little blanket. I took dozens of pictures to remember every part of him in my sorrowful memory. And then we called the children up to meet their brother.
Ashley was in love. Elias was sad. Ezra kept saying, "Awww, he's so cute." And even Thomas climbed on my lap to see him, saying "Baby, baby!" (So ~~anti-life~~ pro-abortionists, what's your excuse? Even a 22 month old knows it's a baby at 12 week gestation without even being told.)

So perfect. And gone so soon.

As we tucked him in his little box, and the children went outside to bury him with daddy (we could not afford to bury him at the cemetery with Jonathan), I wept. I didn't want this again. How can I face the hurt? It was already so raw from Jonathan...and now those wounds have been ripped open again and rubbed with salt.
The pain is overwhelming.
I want my baby back.
I want my rainbow.
I want my BABIES back.
It's so unfair.
Why me?
But then I must remember...why NOT me?

"Many are the plans in a person's heart, but it is the Lord's purpose that prevails." (Proverbs 19:21)

Why was this baby taken from me? Why was Jonathan?
Somehow. Some way....for His glory.
I may never see it this side of heaven, but I know it was for His will to be accomplished. Whether it's refining me. Whether it's to bring a message to the bigger picture for someone in life. Or whether it was just for my husband and I to come together and allow the Lord to create a life between us, if only to be taken after a few short months in the womb to be with Him in worship...it is all for the best.
But it still hurts.
I am sad. I am broken. There is no way to "get over it" and "move on".

This was my child.

Loss is loss because it is really LOST. There is no replacement. No way to fill the hole.

Just a way to make it one minute to the next....because He is carrying me through it all.

The healing will come....I don't know how. But it must.

Although physically it is taking it's good old time. I am still very weak. But slowly, I am starting to feel like myself. At least....my body is.
My heart will never be the same.
There is a hole there.
I loved my baby from the moment I knew of him. And when he died, a part of me was amputated and taken along with him. I can never get it back. I can never get that piece of Jonathan back. Or my other baby, either.

I am broken.
And the pieces that are left are held together only by God's hand.

Yesterday, I went in for testing. To have 6 healthy children, then lose 2 in a row, both second trimester, most likely means a problem has arose in me. We don't know what. And I am praying it's something simple that can be dealt with naturally...or maybe that God could even bless me with just one small miracle and allow it to be nothing at all.
I couldn't imagine dealing with another loss again.
But I know either way, it is all for His will.

When I am drowning in my sorrow, I keep hearing the taunts in my mind...."Where is your God now?" And as I fight the tears every day, I know how to answer: "He's right here."

When we opened our womb to God, we were willing for many children, or if God only blessed us with a few. We never really expected Him to start taking our children away from us. But that is part of the territory of letting him be in control. He does as He pleases. I find myself praying (begging) that if He will continue to take away our babies, to just close my womb. Then I realize how much I don't mean that (even though I do). I don't want to deal with the pain....but yet I DO want the peace of knowing I am/am not having children because we are letting HIM decide, not ourselves. And of course the happiness of knowing I have so many sweet souls waiting for me when I come home, is joyous in it's own.

So in the mean time...we will pray for answers. We will pray for healing. We will pray for His strength to carry us through as we weep over the loss of yet another dear son.

We will pray for Asher's life to be used for His glory.
But most of all, we pray that no matter what, we will be willing to walk this road, even if it's one full of mourning.

There is no footprint too small that it cannot leave an imprint on this earth.

Another Storm

Baby Drama

I know most of you have noticed I have been MIA the past few days....

That is because my doppler arrived a few days ago, which is great because I have been anxiously waiting to hear my little rainbow's heartbeat.

So how is that a reason for me being so preoccupied that I haven't been around to blog?

Well that would be because for the past 3 days I have spent hours trying to find this baby's heartbeat....with no luck.

Yeah.

Nervous.

Paranoid.

Worried.
Frantic.
Hysterical.

Been experiencing them all.

Now, I know that being almost 16 weeks, and the way I carry my babies so low, plus the fact that it's a cheaper doppler, effects everything.
Most likely, everything is fine, and this little monster is probably just chillin' out and having a giggle about avoiding mommy and that evil machine she keeps poking at him with.

But egads, this is the last thing I needed after Jonathan.

I really am scared.
And it's taking every ounce of me not to freak out and get through my days.

I see my midwife for our first visit for this pregnancy next Wednesday, and I so don't want to bother her before that since she is super busy with 10 children of her own.
I know, I'm too polite.
But if my sis can't find it tomorrow with her experienced doppler hand, then I might just have to bug her, even if just to hear her say not to worry.
Because I don't know if my heart can take this drama.

I feel like I am waiting for disappointment.

I am walking around in a fog, because it's the only way I can keep the fear away.
I can't think clearly, because if I do, the irrational side that thinks the worst quickly overtakes the rational side that says everything is most likely fine.

So, yeah.
That's why I've been a bit of a hermit the past week.
So forgive me ya'll.
And please, pray.
Pray for my peace.
Pray for this little one.
And pray I'll have an answer soon.

I cannot bury another baby.
I won't.
Lord willing, I won't have to.

Mommy Mondays: Potty Training Success...Almost....Kinda'....

I cannot believe that only after just one week of working on potty time with Thomas, he is doing so well.

Usually it takes a few weeks of getting the hang of it for my littles, but for Thomas, within three days he was having no more then an accident or two a day.

Alright!

I knew he'd be an easy one to train.

Even today, he was outside playing with the other littles, and about 15 minutes later, I noticed him at the door, hobbling around trying to strip out of his pants.

Yes, the neighbors love us.

I brought him inside, and helped him get his shoes off and his pants from around his ankles where he pulled them, and off he ran to the froggy potty.

Yay mom, I did it!

Yup.

He's a happy boy, cheering for himself when he goes!

Usually my children are always day trained by 26 months.

I think for sure Thomas will be finished before his 2 year birthday.

Unless of course, I totally just jinxed myself by saying that.

Pee pee in the potty?

Check.

Ummm....the other one in the potty and not the underwear....or on the floor?

Praise God for hardwood floors.....

Menu Plan Monday: So It Begins

Yesterday, we started our new journey in food that I mentioned last week.

And in just one day, we have already learned alot.

(Before I say anything, I have to tell you the two recipes I made yesterday were amazing.

Pesto and egg stuffed roasted tomatoes for breakfast/brunch, and the yummiest eggplant mushroom curry ever.)

Mmmmm.

What could we have possibly learned so quickly?

Well, first of all, after just one day, hubby and I feel much better physically without an overabundance of grains (despite the fact that we fresh grind our wheat).

Secondly, no matter how much of this type of food our children wolf down, they still feel like they are starving.
Literally.

I think they all had two to three huge helpings at meal time (way more then even daddy), yet they were still asking for more to eat.

So, from now on, I will still make sure to include a bread at the majority of meals for them, and Matthew and I (or at least Matthew), will avoid it.

I think we will like cutting back on our grains and using a larger variety of them, soaked of course, cutting back on cheese, dairy, and sugar, and doubling our protein and veggie/fruit intake.

Not sure if our wallet will appreciate it as much, but we are at least going to experiment for a month or two to find a happy medium.

And know why else I am so excited?

Yesterday, I started our first batch of fermented sourkraut!

3 whole gallons worth to be exact.

I am looking forward to seeing how it turns out in a few days, as well as trying my hand at making fermented applesauce tomorrow.

Let the adventures in food making begin!

So what's on our menu plan this week?

Despite the changes in our eating, lots of yumminess that my tastebuds are very much anxious to try is filling mine.

And don't worry....I will still be posting lots of delicious recipes just as often.

After all we aren't being a stick in the mud with all of this.

'Cause I don't care what anyone says....don't you dare take away the garlic bread and cheesecake from this pregnant mama. Unless you want to lose a hand. ;o)

It's just so cluttered, and full, and I have absolutely no space or way to organize everything that needs to be in there.

Maybe it's the fact that it also serves as our school room (or at least...school storage room, since we do school at the dining room table).

And it doesn't help that a large amount of space was taken away when we moved our second fridge in there.

And, a huge sliding door, as well as 2 other doors take away even more precious wall space.

Grr.

So what in the world can I do with all of it?

The refrigerator, topped with unused school books.

My buckets of finished Etsy orders (and the children's schoolbags, and filing cabinet for schoolwork.)

Craft supplies, more school books, school supplies, and yarn for my hats.

Drawers of sewing supplies, patterns, and fabric, as well as piled on top.

Shelves of fabric, Ashley's boxes of beads, and encyclopedias.

Oh yeah.

And don't forget the overflow of projects onto the dining room window seat.

*sigh*

How do I make that, look neat, tidy, and uncluttered?

Umm...without spending a penny.

There has to be a way to organize or create the storage space to have everything in it's place and easily accessible, without looking like a tornado struck it every morning.

Give me some ideas ladies!

What can I do to turn that room into something I love?

That is on my agenda this month....change it into a space that is a organizer's dream.

Or at least something that doesn't make me want to cry every time I walk in there.

I am going to do it.

Now to just figure out how.

Sausage and Noodle Dinner

I always had a thing against cabbage.

To me, it always seemed like glorified lettuce.

On steroids.

Asking a child who was raised to be a picky eater like I was to eat anything green, was like asking for me to eat mud.

And something as bold, bitter, and nasty (so I thought) as cabbage?

Why not mix in a worm or two with my spaghetti and ask me to swallow that as well?

Since then, I obviously have had a change in my tastebuds, for as a grown-up, I thoroughly enjoy my veggies.

And cabbage?

It has become one of my favorites.

Especially cooked, like in my homemade egg rolls, thai turkey tacos, stuffed (or un-stuffed!) cabbage rolls, and soooo many more yummy foods.

But my all-time favorite way to eat cabbage has to be the most delicious and amazingly good dish ever.

The flavors are vibrant and burst full in your mouth, and it's creamy comforting goodness is something no one can pass up.

Sausage and Noodle Dinner.

It doesn't look like much, I know, and in fact, with it's boring colors you are probably rolling your eyes at me asking, really?

Yes. Really.

So. So. So. Good.

And thanks to this post I am now monsterly craving it.

Sausage and Noodle Dinner

1 pound of bulk sausage

1 head of cabbage, cored and sliced thinly,

1 onion, sliced thinly

1 large carrot, peeled and shredded

2 tsp chicken bouillon

1/4 cup hot to boiling water

2 cups sour cream

1/4 tsp salt

1/2 tsp pepper

8-12 oz freshly boiled noodles (we use our own homemade noodles, but any work great)

Brown the sausage in a large skillet and drain. Add cabbage, onion, and carrot. Dissolve bouillon in water and add to the veggies. Cover and cook over medium heat until veggies are tender, about 15 minutes.

Reduce heat to low, and stir in sour cream, salt, and pepper. Add the hot noodles and mix.

Enjoy!

A New Year, A New Me....A New You?

I can't believe it's a whole brand spankin' new year.

2011 was filled with more happy moments, more heartache, and more drama then I can even remember.

So many new friends, so many new experiences, and so many new ways that God has refined me.

I am thankful for each and everything that happened, as it honestly has shaped a new outlook for myself in this new year.

What our my "resolutions" for 2012?

I hate the word resolution...to me it will always have the taint of something meant to be broken.

Instead, I am calling them goals.

And trust me, I have plenty this year.

First and foremost is to have a healthy, happy baby born this summer...after Jonathan, you can honestly understand where I am coming from with that one. I am doing everything in my power to make sure that will happen. That, and lots of prayer. Yup, a sweet little rainbow is highest on my list of goals this year (and it'd be even better if that rainbow was a girl....but I won't be that picky. ;o)
To spend even more time focusing on the things most important to me...meaning my family. I want to center as many free moments as I can on them, and less on "stuff" that needs done. It might mean a bit less blogging (as some of you have probably noticed), but not much. I still consider all of you ladies a priority as well. Don't ya' feel special?
Changing our family's eating habits. Yes we make everything as natural and from scratch as possible, but this year we plan to head in an even deeper direction of a larger variety of soaked grains, more veggies, more fermented foods, more raw eggs, less sugar, etc. It will be a hard thing for my sugar loving self to get used to. Determination. That's what I need. And will power. Lots and lots of will power.
Work alot harder to get rid of any and all debt in our household, as well as create a better savings.
To focus hard on keeping my voice soft to my children, and be a better wife and mother (see patience)
To expand my Etsy store and add lots of new and fun items (like soaps, lotions, cloth diapers, and more!)
To majorly purge and simplify this house. (An ongoing battle.)

I know there are so many more things I want to achieve this year, but these are the main ones I am determined to tackle.

Menu Plan Monday

A new year, a new season of our lives in food.

Yes, we already cook everything we can from scratch.

Yes we use as much whole wheat, raw sugar/honey, natural/organic products as possible.

But this year, we are going to try and venture much further into the world of natural living.

After I clean out my pantry this week, I will head off to the store on Saturday for my once a month shopping.

And as much as possible, or at least as much as I can as I learn, our diets will consist of more fermented foods, more raw farm fresh eggs, more veggies and herbs, more fish (ack), less potatoes, less wheat and a larger variety of grains, less dairy like cheese (Lord help us), even less sugar and sweets (Lord help me), and just an all out more rustic and seasonal diet of our forefathers.

I hope our tastebuds won't go through too much withdrawl of the typical American country kitchen type diet.

It won't be easy.

Anyone have suggestions?

A Rainbow

Well, in case you missed the announcement, it's official.

My rainbow baby is on the way.

A rainbow.

Isn't that such a fitting thing to call this baby?

To get a rainbow, you must first battle the storm.

After all of that darkness and gloom, then shines the beauty afterwards.

Oh,you can't forget the storm....after all, a rainbow can't appear without one, and the dreary clouds are still hovering in the sky.

But it does bring beauty and light at the end of it all.

I am just about 14 weeks (I think), and I look like I am at 20.

My uterus took no time in forgetting what to do this time.

Why hello there, I know how to do this job! Whooomph!
It's very happy to be back to work, I assure you.

Looking at this picture makes me face reality. That this little one growing inside isn't my Jonathan, but a whole new blessing.

Wow.

I am doing my best to enjoy every moment of this pregnancy...although, I am still somewhat in denial.
I go about my day normally, trying not to think about it all too often.

And trust me, I am a thinker, so it's not easy.

But when I do allow myself to ponder this new blessing more then just a little, the worries set in.

The fears.

The lack of faith.

What if this happens, and what if that happens?

The dread of going through a loss again is almost crippling.

It's so hard not to be afraid of it all...the pain is all too recent to forget.

Not that anyone ever forgets the loss of a child.

I feel like I am battling fears every minute of the day with this baby. How do I not? I am trying to cling to God's Word, and His promises....but sometimes that scares me even more.

A precious friend of mine put it into words best....

"I think for a lot of Christians part of what makes the next pregnancy (after a loss) so hard is that you *do* trust God and that He has a plan for all things. You *know* that it was God's plan to take your child home before they ever took a breath on this earth. Now that you are expecting again, its not that you don't trust that God can take care of this baby, you worry that it might be His plan to take this child as well."

She is 100% right.

I do trust God that it is all His will, and He will do what's best for His plan, not mine.

And that totally might mean taking away this child as well.....

And of that, I am terrified.

Trying to stay strong and think positive....but by golly Lord, couldn't you have made this struggle a bit easier?

Another way of drawing me closer to Him, I guess.

Isn't it funny though?

He takes our child to be with Him, we cling to Him in our pain (even though He is the one who caused it), then we thank Him for the new blessing in our womb, yet at the same time are clinging to Him again for trust that He won't take away this one as well.

Honestly...that takes a mind boggling amount of faith. No wonder it can be so hard.

But it is what we are called to do....

Only 13ish weeks.

Such a long way to go.

So far, this pregnancy has been dragging by.

I haven't told many people before this, because I felt like I was jinxing myself.

*Crosses fingers*

But I am at the point where I need the support of others, for no matter which way the Lord steers this all.

Do you know how hard it was for me to keep this secret from you gals?

Honestly, I felt like I was going to explode. I just couldn't wait any longer. You all have supported me through so much...and I am blessed to have you along for this newest journey as well.

So, what's been happening so far with this little one?

Well, nothing much yet.
Besides the fact I am already big as a house. Ahem.

Around 11 weeks I felt the baby move at least once a day for a whole week straight. Then he (yes he, because honestly, with my track record, is there any other option?) decided to give mama an anxiety attack already and not move for days. Since then, I have felt a few flutters here and there, but nothing consistent. Hoping this baby will be a wiggle worm sooner then later, so I can relax a bit.

I go to see my midwife for the first visit sometime in the next few weeks. Guess I should call her to set up an appointment soon, huh? Again, putting it off in fears of jinxing myself.

And silly thing is, I am not even superstitious.

I am soooooo looking forward to hearing this little one's heartbeat then. Praying it will be loud and clear and easy to find.

I plan on getting a doppler soon as well, so I can whip it out at 3 in the morning when I wake up in a worried dream filled frenzy.

The beginning of February (which is honestly so close!), I'll be heading for my 20 week ultrasound to confirm that this little guy is indeed a guy.

Because again, there isn't any other option, is there? I have come to realize girls are just a fluke of nature. :oP
Even though I am super excited and anxious for that day to get here, I am also terribly dreading it. In fact, I am not even allowing myself to think that far ahead.

I think those 20 week ultrasounds will always have a tainted memory to them from now on.

I am still ridiculously nauseated, and nothing sounds good to me but orange juice and fudge (yes, together), hamburgers, and salads....lots of yummy salads loaded with veggies, chicken strips, and gobs of dressing. Yum.

Oh, and Twizzler Bites. DON'T forget the Twizzler Bites.

Ahhh, the insanity, I have got to have some!

The joys of pregnancy cravings.

Too bad I need to go grocery shopping, and don't have any of those things on hand. Grrr.

Since everything else I eat tastes like pure nastiness, I have been eating spoonfuls of homemade peanut butter, since it's all I can choke down otherwise.

Besides the turbulent tummy, I've just been really sleepy. Like really really sleepy.

That's the main reason (besides the holidays and a million Etsy orders to catch up on) that I haven't honestly been blogging as much lately. My brain is in such a fog that being my usual witty and charming self has been a struggle.

I know, so disappointing.

Hopefully the brain funk will fade away soon and I will be back to normal.

Ummm, whatever normal is.

So that's that.

Even though much isn't happening, it's most definitely an exciting time.

A rainbow is on the horizon!

And I am as cautiously thrilled as can be. :o)

Now if the next 20sumthin' weeks could hurry up and pass!

In the meantime, I'll just sit here, half asleep as I type, gagging away while my children giggle and pretend to gag back, being my big ol' pregnant self, trying not to think about being pregnant. Much. Yet.

And doing my best to imagine that spoonfuls of peanut butter are chewy cherry bites of goodness.

Yeah. Good luck with that one, Holly.

Harder Then I Thought

Tomorrow is December 28th.

It would have been Jonathan's due date.

It's so hard to believe that what seemed like a lifetime past when I held my sweet baby in my arms, was just a few short months ago in August.

It's also so hard to figure out, looking back, how I've made it so far to this day.

I never thought I could.

After holding my precious child, knowing he would never make a sound, never take a breath, and never look into my eyes this side of heaven, I couldn't have ever imagined living life normally again.

And technically I haven't.

The days go by.

Some are better then others.

But all are hard.

And all include "what if's".

What if I could have done something to keep him alive?

What if it was my fault he died in the first place?

What would he have looked like when he was toddler...who's personality would he have had?

What if he didn't know how much I loved him?

Everyone kept saying these days leading up close to his "due date" would be hard.

And I always thought, "Of course".

But I wasn't prepared for this....

For the tears that come out of nowhere and flow uncontrollably, as bad, and if not worse then when he was born.

It's like reality has hit, without showing an ounce of mercy.

And still, time goes on.

And I must be strong.

I'll make it.

I always do.

I know the pain will subside to a dull ache...eventually.

And in the mean time, I will chase away the hurt with thankfulness.

Thankful to God for granting me his short life to begin with.

Thankful for the impact both he and his death have made on so many.

Thankful for the ministry I have been able to have to others who are experiencing the same thing.

Thankful for the lessons I have learned from all of this.

Thankful for the friends who have supported me and blessed me with so much during this time.

Thankful for the sweet memories I have of him...those tiny kicks, those precious pictures....

And through it all, I will remember that joy really does come in the morning.

And there really is a rainbow after the storm:

Jonathan Levi might be with Jesus instead of here with me this December 28th...but I know he is looking down with a smile at the blessing of his new sibling.

And for that I am most thankful of all.

Peppermint Mocha Chip Muffins

Seriously.

Peppermint Mocha Chip Muffins

2 cups flour
1/4 cup cocoa
1/2 cup sugar
3 teaspoons baking powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup white chocolate chips
1 tablespoon instant coffee
1/4 cup hot water
3/4 teaspoon peppermint extract
1 egg
3/4 cup milk
1/3 cup oil

Topping
5 tablespoons sugar

Espresso Glaze {For an Extra Coffee Kick}
1-1/2 teaspoons instant coffee
1-1/2 tablespoons hot water
3/4 cup powdered sugar

Preheat oven to 375 degrees. In a medium bowl combine the flour, cocoa, sugar, baking powder, salt and chocolate chips. In a small bowl combine the instant coffee and hot water. Stir until dissolved.
To the flour mixture stir in the coffee, peppermint extract, egg, milk and oil. Stir until just combined.
Spoon batter into prepared muffin tin.
Combine the sugar and brown sugar. Sprinkle over muffins.
Bake at 375 degrees for 15-18 minutes. For a stronger coffee flavor, combine the ingredients of the espresso glaze in a small bowl. Drizzle over cooled muffins.

The Duggar Family: Why All The Hate?

The Duggars.

A household name, I am sure.

A strong family, full of love, morals, values, godly wisdom, and lots and lots of (very well behaved, I might add) children.

And yet they are despised.
Why?

When they announced they were expecting baby #20, the haters came out of the woodwork in droves.
In fact, every time they announce a pregnancy, more myths, rumors, and all-out stupidity surface.

And when that sweet baby was born still but a few weeks ago? The venom was spewed even more, with the majority of those negative comments being from "Christians" as well.

"They are just an out of control baby factory."
"See? God is just telling her to stop having babies."
"Those pictures they took of a dead fetus are just morbid."

Why?
Why all of this hate?

I'll tell you why.
Because the Duggars are living up to God's word.
Because the Duggars are challenging the worldview of almost everyone out there, including Christians.
Because no one else wants more children, so surely these people shouldn't either, and by all means should be criticized for daring to think outside the box.
The Duggars shine the light on so many lies our society is blindly following and proving them all to be false, and because of that, our morally deceived society is starting to panic...and of course, they react in anger.

"How dare you try to show me the truth! I’m enjoying the world the way I see it, so there! Neener neener, I can't heeeeear you!"

And what are those lies that cause people to run away screaming or stand and bite like a rabid dog when exposed?

That children are a burden not a blessing: They all take so much time and energy, especially when they are helpless whiny babies. Or in their terrible twos. Or rotten teenagers. Or unthankful adults.

That children are extreme financial burdens: They cost an arm and a leg, needing everything new and fancy under the sun (That is, in order to be considered a good parent.)

There is no way children can be responsible and helpers around the house, and not feel like they are deprived, jealous and annoyed with their other siblings, and miss out on their "childhood".

That homeschoolers are just plain weird, unsocialized, and stupid...unable to function in the real world of course.

Having too many children is a drain on society: Nevermind that a large family can take care of themselves 100%, and actually conserve and contribute more then a family of 4.

Having too many children is a drain on the mother's body. After all, don't you know if you have more then 2.1 children (and you are really pushing the limit if you have THREE! *gasp*), any closer then 27.625 months apart your body will just crumble to pieces?

That being "just a mother" is worthless. After all, she does nothing productive for society then raise a bunch of little snotty nosed babies. How DARE she enjoy it and be content with that?!

And the biggest lie: "We did everything right with our children and raised them in a godly home, and they still rebelled. There is no way there isn't something secretly wrong with the Duggars or any other above "average" sized family...they won't continue in the faith."

~~People~~ Christians want the Duggar family to fall apart. They want them to fail. They want to see it all fall apart, and have things go wrong, so they an continue believing the fairy tales they have been fed and not have to change.
When a family can stay together, under one roof and raise them all without outside assistance (not to mention to be loving, caring, and productive members of society) who are these people to criticize? Especially when their own families are anything but.
But maybe that's exactly the reason.

They want the lies.
So they must hate the messenger.
And the Duggars show it all for what it is....
A bunch of rubbish.

In fact...most large families show the world the same thing.
It is why we are all despised.
"That family of 10...how disgusting. Look at them...all well behaved, kind and thoughtful, helpful to each other, smart, loving each other. How horrid!"

Yes, and to them it honestly is horrid.
Because it brings their selfishness to light.
And we can't have that now, can we?

People do not want to see large families work.
They don't honestly want to see children as a real blessing from God.
Because then they have no excuse the deny it themselves.

They don't want to believe it.
Ignorance is bliss!
And most of all, Christians don't want to believe GOD is in control of conception...at least not 100%. Because then....that means if they control their family size instead of allowing the Lord to be, they might be denying God's will. Oopsie. But...after all...they KNOW God is telling them to be done, the same way God is telling them that the DUGGARS should be done.

Newsflash for you, in all love.....God doesn't give babies on accident. There is a plan for every single one. And guess what that means? If you are preventing having another one, that means you are refusing God's will. If He wants you to have another, He will give it. If He doesn't, He won't. That means HE'S in control....not you. Allow Him to do His work, instead of refusing Him by saying you know what's better.

When the sweet pictures of Jubilee Shalom, the Duggars stillborn little one at 16 short weeks, were released on the internet, people were disgusted.
Why?
Again, because it exposes the truth.

The Duggars value human life.
Even that sweet baby girl's.

And let's face it...society, even Christians....do not.

By seeing those tiny hands and feet, they are forced to face that it was an actual baby, not some blob of stuff, in such a disposable society.
By seeing a family grieve and honor such a tiny person, reminds them that this little one was actually a precious child, as valuable as all the others out there.

"They already have 19. They need to stop."

Just because there are 19 children in their home, does that mean this child was any less important?
If there were 20 children in a building and one died, should we say, "Oh well, there are still 19. Get over it."?

Just because I had six living children, and then my sweet Jonathan who died around the same time as Jubilee Duggar, does that mean he was any less valuable?

Is this disgusting?

Just fetal tissue?

No.
A baby.
A precious little child, created and formed by God for a purpose, and just as beautiful and treasured as all of my others.

So again...why all the hate?
Well, why do people hate any large family?

Because they don't want to admit everything they were led to believe is a lie.
And they were foolish enough to follow it.
They don't want to admit they are behaving like selfish children themselves, and the Duggars are not.
They don't want to admit children are a blessing.

But we know better.
Don't we.

When you think of Christmas, your mind drifts to happy times with family, lots of snow outside, twinkling lights, hot chocolate and cookies by the fire....and food.

Lots of it.

Oh yes my friends.

It's one monsterous feast fit for a king.

But we are not going to talk about Christmas dinner today.

Nopers.

Instead, my mind is thinking of Christmas breakfast!

It's where the festivities of the day all begin folks.

So it's gotta be good!

Whether you eat first thing in the morning before presents, or a late brunch after every last gift has been opened, it calls for something special.

Like ooey gooey cinnamon rolls.

Or these oatmeal waffles with apple cinnamon topping that just scream Christmas.

Or maybe you have a hubby like I do who prefers a heartier morning meal like my savory breakfast pie.

This year, we are going to stick with some family favorites, and enjoy homemade sausage, scrambled cheesy eggs, and the most to-die-for-delicious hashbrown casserole you have ever tasted in your life.

Seriously.

So full of creamy goodness, loaded with cheese, and absolutely just like Cracker Barrel's hashbrown casserole, only 500 time better.

It really is the ultimate breakfast side dish ever.

Ever.

If you are looking for a special something to serve with your Christmas breakfast/brunch, I guarantee this is it.

Baked Hashbrowns

2 lbs frozen shredded hashbrowns

1/2 cup melted butter

3/4 tsp salt

1/4 tsp pepper

1 can cream soup (homemade makes it extra creamy :o)

2-3 cups of cheddar

1/2 tsp onion powder

2 cups sour cream

Mix everything together and spread in a 9x13" baking dish. Bake at 350 for 1 hour or until golden.

Jolly Holly Christmas Bash - Day 3: Handmade Giving

For the past 2 days, I've been bustin' my ever-growin' bootie whipping out goodie after goodie from my kitchen.

Hence the reason I didn't get to post yesterday.

And hence the reason my bootie is also ever growing. :o/

Sugar cookies, cappuccino brownies, peanut butter cups, peppermint patties, peanut butter honey fudge, "twix" bars....so many yummy things to eat!

And all for giving as gifts to the sweet family and friends on our Christmas list.

In our household, handmade is the way to go.

Not only is it more frugal for our gargantuan list (ya know, because we're not made of money), but people really do appreciate the time and effort put into each item.

It's special.
It's unique.
And sometimes it's really really yummy.

Homemade peanut butter cups....can you say, mmmmm?

Or rich, indulgent truffles.

Yum...who's gonna' make those for me this year?

Puppy chow, muddy buddies, monkey much...whatever name makes your skirt fly up, it's the food fit for kings.
I bet you the three wisemen carried it in their satchels to snack on their journey.

Homemade treats are my favorites to give.
Delicious sweet breads, jams and dips, cocoa and coffee mixes, or mouth watering cookies or candies.
Every goodie is sure to be a favorite from the recipient.

Don't have a cooking bone in your body?
Don't fret...gourmet baskets like a pancake breakfast (boxed pancake mix, bottles of flavored syrups, hot cocoa mix, etc.) or an Italian feast (boxed spaghetti boodles, jarred sauce, loaf of italian bread, cookies...), are wonderful and definitely appreciated...one less meal they'll have to plan during this busy holiday!

A few years ago I made cute little patchwork purses for my mom and sis. Using scraps of fabric from my stash (free!), I cut and pieced together unique bags, like a "blue" theme for my sister complete with a scrappy fish and button bubbles.

This year, the children helped make adorable snowmen ornaments for the grandmas, as well as drew special pictures for framing.

Not only are my children getting a few fun surprises this holiday, they are also each getting a character hat made by me, clothes I sewed for their special dolls/stuffed animals, and Miss Ashley is even getting a new tutu.

Jolly Holly Christmas Bash - Day 2: Cookie Exchange

It just wouldn't be Christmas without cookies, now would it?

Sure, you can make sugar cookies any old time of the year.

You can even smother them in royal icing all pretty, with edible glitter and silver balls for any occasion, but they never taste quite as yummy as this time of year.

There's no better time to grab a mug of hot chocolate (or coffee!), and a plateful of yummy cookies for ~~lunch~~ er...a treat. To share. Of course.

Ahem.

Gingerbread men, thumbprints, Swedish cookies, sugar cookies, peanut butter kisses, and the list goes on.

And then you get into the into the fancy schmancy sweet treats, like poppyseed rolls, buckeyes, peppermint fudge, truffles...

In our house, we love to make a huge variety of goodies to share.

Because I'm all about variety.

I mean, I have 6 children, so this family is full of variety.

But one thing is for sure....

It just wouldn't be Christmas without making great grandma's Sour Cream Sugar Cookies.

This cookie is the softest, and yummiest sugar cookie possible. Even made with wheat flour, it still stays ridiculously moist...and just gets softer as they are stored!
If they last that long.
And I love how it's not overly sweet. (Because the icing more than makes up for it.)
Plus they make a great traveling cookie, as they hold up really well.

Great Grandma's Sour Cream Sugar Cookies

5 and 1/2 cups flour
1 tsp salt
1 tsp soda
1 cup butter
2 cups sugar
2 eggs
1 cup sour cream
1 tsp vanilla

Beat butter, sugar, eggs, and sour cream until light and fluffy.
Add the rest of the ingredients, and then refrigerate overnight. (Or freeze for 2 hours if your children decide they cannot wait any longer to decorate the cookies.)

Roll out to about 1/4 inch thick. (This is a very sticky dough, although chilling it does help considerably. You still may need to knead in a bit of flour before it rolls well...use your judgement!)
Let the children go to town with the cookie cutters. (Try not to fret about them eating more dough then they are putting on the tray.)

Bake at 350 degrees for 10-12 minutes, or until just set and just starting to turn golden on the edges.

Allow to cool, and have fun decorating! These work great with both buttercream or royal icing. Get creative!

Jolly Holly Christmas Bash - Day 1: Tradition....TRADITION!

Everytime I hear the word tradition, I want to pull out my fiddle, and climb on the roof.

That is if I had a fiddle.

And if I wasn't terrified of heights.
Otherwise I'd hop right up there.

But the father in Fiddler on the Roof had it right. Tradition is grossly important, and not to mention a fun and enjoyable part of family life. To pass down time loved activities to your children and generations to come makes the simplest thing one to excitedly look forward to and anticipate!

So far, since our family is young, we haven't really set many of our own traditions yet. But we definitely want to create them as the years go by!

Let's see....how do we ring in the season ever year?

The weekend after Thanksgiving, we officially start Christmas. The tree and decorations go up, and the Christmas music starts to play.
Daily, I might add.
In fact, if you could hear what's going on in our home right now (if you ignored the sounds of the and 3 and 5 year old bickering), you would hear Bing Crosby belting out It's Beginning to Look Alot Like Christmas on our Pandora playlist.
It just wouldn't be the holiday season without Christmas music constantly playing in the background.

Or without watching this a billion times...

What Christmas season would be complete without Alvin? It just wouldn't be right.

Last year, we attempted making our own gingerbread houses. We won't be talking about that little endeavor. Ever.

So instead this year, we made these.

Not edible, but just as fun, and much much cuter!
And most importantly.....definitely not messy.

We will certainly be adding these fun foam gingerbread houses to our yearly to-do list!

And of course, we have to create new ornaments to add to our every growing tree.

This year, Mr. Marshmallow snowmen joined the evergreen that is covered with paper stars, popsicle stick sleds, and glittery snowflakes.

This week, we'll gather up the baking supplies, and the children and I will spend the day making and decorating Christmas cookies, and then baking lots of other goodies for gifts.
The little ones had fun creating handmade cards to go with all the treats we will be delivering to everyone this weekend.

Every year since I can remember as a child, our families on my side have spent Christmas Eve at my grandma's house. The past few years we have moved it over to my aunt's, so that is where we will be until late evening, enjoying delicious foods (including my chocolate caramel almond cheesecake and homemade egg nog!) and wonderful family.

When we get home that night, we allow the children to open their stocking goodies, and one of their "together" presents. (These are one of the gifts we get for them to share...it's become a yearly tradition in it's own to get them the next cd's in the Jonathon Park series.)
Sometimes we'll watch a Christmas movie, like Mickey's Christmas Carol or The Grinch.

After the children are dreaming of sugar plums in their beds, hubby and I will have some snuggle time by the fire...hopefully with some liquored hot chocolate! We'll set out the rest of the presents, and wait for morning excitement to arrive!

When day breaks, we'll open gifts and have a delicious Christmas breakfast (like yummy hashbrown casserole and sausage) and read about birth of Christ in the Bible.
We want our children to remember our Saviour is the one and only gift that counts.

Spending the day playing games, drinking coconut hot chocolate, eating Christmas cookies, and enjoying eachother's company is top on our to-do list. And of course finish it off with a Christmas feast of delicious pineapple ham, scalloped potatoes, and so much more!

So that's it?
Yeah, so far we are a bit boring when it comes to traditions.

But to us, the most important thing to pass along to our children is our love as a family.
And I think we are accomplishing that quite nicely!

The Wonderful World of Kefir

Sourdough.

Yogurt.

Buttermilk.

Sourkraut.

And now kefir.

Yet another thing growing in my kitchen.

I swear, I have so many living critters in there, my kitchen should be self sufficient. :oP

A few weeks ago, hubby and I were able to purchase some healthy milk kefir babies, and I have been having fun nurturing my little guys every day.

They are so cute!

Maybe I should name them.
Let's see.
Timmy. Fred. Bob. Biff....

They are still in the adjusting phase...tiny, with a slightly watery/milk/thin yogurt consistency, but I am seeing them perk up daily.

I am still extremely paranoid about killing them or not treating them right though. After all I am a newbie.

Yes, I've raised 6 children well so far, but I am a bad baby kefir mother when it comes to knowing what to do.

I have watched several tutorials...but have never actually seen it all done in real life unlike other things I've learned. How they grow, have it's all supposed to look.....I know it's not hard, and I'm probably reading too much into it, but I want to be sure!

So tell me...what exactly do I do?

Everyone's opinion seems to be different. For you pros out there, give me your advice, please.

How often should they be growing?

Do new little ones form, or do pieces just break off the bigger ones?

Should I feed them every 24 hours? Or should I wait 48 since they seem to not be producing a very thick kefir?

We are using organic, un-homogonized, full fat milk....should I just use the store bought stuff?

Ack, so many questions!

Just tell me everything you know with your kefir expertise so I can figure it all out!

Those Buttery Bites of Goodness (Crescent Rolls)

We've all had them.

And we all know they are yummy.

Crescent rolls.

I used to love crescent rolls.

Not just the savory kind, but those flaky, sweet, glazed ones too.

Yum.

And yes, I admit, even the premade ones that you roll up and bake.

They were simple, delicious, and frugal.

Or so I used to think back when our diet consisted of high fructose corn syrup and other "food" stuff that was whipped up in a chemistry lab.

Yes, you can pop 'em out of a can and bake them in 10 minutes flat, but who wants all those nasty ingredients?

After we started eating real food and cooking from scratch, I forgot about those buttery bundles of goodness.

Until recently.

I knew I wanted one.

Now.

And by golly, I was gonna' have one.

So I dug out an old-fashioned tried and true recipe, and prayed it wouldn't flop nor be the death of me with complication.

After all, a mama of 6 only has so much time to sacrifice on cravings.

Throwing all that butter, and yeast, and butter, and flour, and my gosh, more butter, I knew anything with all that dairy fat has got to be good.

And oooh la la, c'est magnifique!

So soft, scrumptious, and melt in your mouth amazing.

These will liven' up any old boring meal.

Not to mention make you wanna' put on a beret, a curly cue mustache, and talk like zeees.....

And despite the fact that they are so easy, your family and friends will think you a très bonne chef!

Be sure to throw in some French for authenticity.

Bon appètit à mon petit ami!

Crescent Rolls

2 and 1/4 tsp yeast

1/4 cup warm water

1 Tbsp plus 1/2 cup sugar, divided *

3/4 cup warm milk

3 eggs

1/2 cup butter, melted (plus more for brushing)

1 tsp salt

5 - 5 and 1/2 cups flour *

Dissolve yeast in water with 1 Tbsp of sugar. Add milk, eggs, butter, salt, and remaining sugar. Stir in enough flour to form a stiff dough, and knead till smooth and elastic. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled (about an hour.)

Divide into thirds, and roll each in to a 12" circle. Cut each circle into 8 wedges. Brush with more melted butter, then roll up from wide edge to point. Place on greased sheet, cover and rise about 30 minutes.

Bake 375 degrees for 10-12 minutes or until golden.

* I used whole wheat flour and raw sugar with perfect results, so don't hesitate!

Or maybe Lively Up, a medium dark 5 bean espresso mix, bursting with subtle hints of cocoa and caramel, and a bold flavor that was a guaranteed eye-opener?

Surely not Simmer Down, a sweet, dark decaf. At least not right now. After all...it was 5am, remember?

Ahh. I know.

One Love. Their 100% Ethiopian Yirgacheffe beans with a medium body, fruity floral and chocolate tones, and a slight cherry finish.

Perfect for the dreary cold morning that was outside my window.

I have thoroughly enjoyed and savored each and every cup of my Marley Coffees.

Even the Simmer Down decaf! And for me, that's saying alot, because I really dislike decaf. After all, what's the point of coffee, without the kick? But since I have majorly been trying to cut back on my caffeine intake (ha!), I still want to think I am drinking my java, without actually doing it. So much caffeine, so little time.

I had the opportunity to try out a RearZ Smitten Diaper for all of my little men.

The Smitten is a super soft velour fitted diaper that is totally "Better then organic"!
Why?
Well, 100% natural cotton that is unbleached, and colored with organic dyes makes it a great diaper for your little one's sensitive rear.

First of all, I love the bright and vibrant colors, and super soft fabric.
It's almost too bad it's a fitted and needs a cover, since it's not waterproof in it's own. It's too cute to cover up!

The size range of the RearZ Smitten are Small (0-6 months) all the way to XL (41+ pounds.) In fact, the XL has so much extra absorbency sewn in, it is even able to withstand the night wettings of a 6 year old!

The size Large that I was given fit Thomas amazingly. At a range of 22-40 pounds he has plenty of room to grow. The extra big applix tabs allow for a perfectly customizable fit, especially since they can overlap if need be.
And yes, it fits my 3 and 5 year olds at night just as well!

The rise is nice and high, the leg elastic really fits good and snug, and it is very trim. That's always a plus. It's just a super comfy diaper!

The Smitten is unique as well in so many ways....

With a tongue style insert, it makes for super fast drying time.

And then there's this...

A pocket!
The RearZ Smitten is the only fitted on the market with a pocket opening, allowing for all the extra stuffing you could want.

All in all, I am extremely pleased with the RearZ Smitten Fitted Diaper. I am able to get a great fit under all of my covers because of it's trimness, it's one super thirsty little guy, and the fact that it is made of all natural fibers makes for one happy mama....and baby!

I am spending the day cooking my keester off for my friend's extra special rainbow baby shower tomorrow!

Being a hostess is so much work.
Too much.

Every time I do this type of thing I always say "never again".
Yup.
Never again!
I mean it this time.
*ahem*

Ok. I am totally ready for a nap.
Or bed time.
Whichever comes first.

But I still have so much more to do!

So far, I have finished 50 cupcakes, 3 crusts for veggie pizzas, 3 dozen rainbow chip cookies, and a double batch of cream cheese dip for apples, all made from scratch, mind you.
Couldn't feed the partiers any less quality then I'd feed my family.
Although trust me, with all the work I was more then tempted.
But I didn't cave.
Nope.
Aren't you proud of me?

Tomorrow morning I have to frost the cupcakes, and throw the pizzas together, ready the games, gifts, prizes, and about 5 billion other things to prep before 2pm.

Sheesh, I tell ya' one thing.

I love my sweet friend to death, but I will be so glad when this is all over!

"Blessed to be His" Wednesday: Created to be His Helpmeet - Obedient To Their Own Husbands

"That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children, to be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands....." (Titus 2:4)

Obedient: Yielding, willing and eager to accomplish injunctions or desires, abstaining from that which is forbidden.

Uh oh.

The"O" word.

Not many women like this one.

And many choose to dismiss it away.

Well now...how about we let God's Word speak for itself here, shall we?

"...teach the young women to be obedient to their own husbands that the word of God be not blasphemed." (Titus 2:4-5)

"Unto the woman he said, I will greatly multiply thy sorrow and the conception; in sorrow thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over thee" (Genesis 3:16)

"But I would have you know, that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is the man; and the head of Christ is God." (1 Corinthians 11:3)

"Nevertheless let every one of you in particular so love his wife even as himself; and the wife see that she reverence her husband." (Ephesians 5:33)

"Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as it is fit in the Lord." (Colossians 3:18)

"Likewise, ye wives be in subjection to your own husband; that, if any not obey the word, they may also without the word be won by the conversation of the wives." (1 Peter 3:1)

"Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord. For the husband is the head of the wife, even as Christ is the head of the church: and he is the saviour of the body. Therefore as the church is subject unto Christ, so let the wives be to their own husbands in every thing." (Ephesians 5:22-24)

Huh.

So according to God, we are to submit to our husbands.

Honor him.

Obey him.

It isn't a cultural thing.

It isn't an "outdated" thing.

It is our calling and one of beauty.

We do not lose our dignity being in subjection to our husbands. We are not doormats.
Are our husbands less dignified by being in subjection to Christ?

No.

Just as our husbands find security and meaning by being in subjection to Christ (their head), we find the person God created us to be by being in submission to our head - our husbands.

"Wives, submit yourselves unto your own husbands, as unto the Lord."

We should view our submission and love to our husbands with the same glory and fervency as our love for Christ. In fact, when we do so, we are submitting to Christ, by obeying His authority and recognizing His will for us.

Ans that will is to obey our husbands.

Our own husbands, mind you.

Not our pastor.

Not any other man.

These are not your head.

Just your husband.

He is the one leading you through Christ.

And to be in God's will, you must follow him in all things.

And what of the sad situation where your husband might not be a believer?

What then?

Simple.

Honor him.

Obey him.

The same thing.

Unless he is asking a blatant outright and boldfaced sin of you, obey him.

It is with this honor and submission that you will win him.

"Likewise, ye wives be in subjection to your own husband; that, if any obey not the word, they may also without the word be won by the conversation of the wives." (1 Peter 3:1)

Not by nagging or preaching at him.

But by following him.

Why?

Why must we obey our husbands?

Well, besides the fact that God says to.....

"A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh him ashamed is as rotteness in his bones." (Proverbs 12:4)

"The heart of her husband doth safely trust in her, so that he shall have no need of spoil." (Proverbs 31:11)

"She will do him good and not evil all the days of her life." (Proverbs 31:12)

Don't you want to be a crown to your husband?

Don't you want your children to grow with respect for their father?

Don't you want to obey God?

Then honor your husband.

Submit.

Follow.

Encourage him.

Show him love and support in all he does.

It is a wonderful thing.

Hello Winter! (Cheeseburger Chowder Recipe)

I love soups.

Must be why I enjoy cold weather so much.

In fact it's the only reason I enjoy cold weather at all.

There is nothing more scrumptious then a steamy bowl of hearty chowder on a blustery fall day.

Except of course, for maybe a mug of rich, hot coffee.

My favorite soups are the ones that are loaded with cheesy, creamy goodness.

Like this one.

You just can't get it any better.

I could eat bowls of this stuff.

And in fact, the other night, I did just that.

Loaded with yummy potatoes, ground beef, sour cream....mmmm.

Grab a big ol' chunk of crusty bread to sop in it, and you have the perfect meal to warm you up.

Cheeseburger Chowder

2 lbs ground beef

1/2 cup chopped onion

5 cups water

6 tsp beef bouillon granules

1 tsp salt

5 potatoes, cubed

2 ribs of celery, chopped

6 Tbsp flour

5 cups milk

3 cups cheddar cheese

1 cup sour cream

Brown beef and onion. Add water, salt, bouillon, potatoes, and celery. Simmer 15-20 minutes until veggies are tender.

Mix flour, and 1 cup of milk until smooth. Stir into soup and boil for 2 minutes or until starting to thicken. Add the rest of the milk and cheese, and heat until melted and hot.

Mommy Mondays: Oh So Proud

Friday morning after breakfast, we told the children to hurry and clean up the table and dishes so we could get the Christmas decorations out!

You should have seen the rush of little feet as they quickly hopped to their jobs!

So while they were getting breakfast chores finished up, Matthew and I headed upstairs to get ready for the day.

And after hearing lots of commotion downstairs, we came down 15 minutes later to find six very busy and determined children.

What were they doing?

Well, not only had they finished all of the clean up, they had also put away every single fall decoration, brought up all of the Christmas boxes, set out each and every snowman decoration around the house, and were already setting up the tree!

All by themselves!

They happily worked away and soon enough, the lights were ready to be put on (by mama of course...I'm not that brave!!).

And then the ornaments.

And last but not least....

Such a proud mommy moment.
I cannot believe how big and helpful my littles are getting!

It's amazing to watch them do so much.
And the joy in their eyes everytime we turn on the tree at night, knowing that they did it all themselves!
Priceless!

So...I just had to brag. :o)

But sometimes they get stuck in the elastic if I have a particularly big load, and make for one nasty mess. With the Smart Sleeve being so wide and loose on top of the lining, it allows the inserts to easily wash out 100% of the time.

And speaking of the Smart Sleeve....because it is so roomy, you can easily add extra stuffing to their included microfiber inserts for custom absorbency.

This diaper is super trim both on my little, and big guys. It fits extremely well! A bit wide in the crotch, but not bulky in the least.
Although my one wish would be for it to have 2 rows of snaps, both waist and leg, for a better leak-proof fit.

(As you can see from the pictures, if you have a very active little one, the wings tend to droop after awhile without the extra snaps. Not a huge problem, but I have gotten spoiled the other way.
And pardon his poor little eczema rash on his leg :o( )

I love the super soft and simple colors of their waterproof fabric, and the stay dry lining really does live up to it's name!

A person is as what she does:

Do good? Then be good.

Do bad? Then show your true colors.

"A virtuous woman is a crown to her husband: but she that maketh ashamed is as rottenness in his bones." (Proverbs 12:4)

Are you a good wife?

Are you frugal with your husband's hard earned money? Or are you quick to spend it?

Are you a diligent homemaker and trainer of your children? Or does your house and family dishonor your man?

Do you treat your husband with respect and love? Or do you nag and frown at every little thing he does or doesn't do?

Are you a crown to your husband? Or rottenness in his bones.

So what if your husband isn't the best man out there? It is still your job to make him look good.

By being "good" yourself.

By being a crown to your husband, you are teaching your children to honor him, and rise up and call you blessed.

And most of all....you are bringing honor to God by fullfilling your calling as a helpmeet.

As a good woman...are you prudent? Are you a helper to your husband, or do you expect him to be your servant to things that need done around the house? Learn how to do some of them yourself!

Are you crowned with knowledge? Learning how to be more diligent with your finances, cooking better meals, learning herbs and gardening for your health...all of these things make a good wife.

Are you a "doing" woman? Or are you slothful and lazy? Be diligent with your time and your resources.

What are the traits of a good woman?

Why, one need only look at Proverbs 31:10-31.

Mommy Mondays: The Toy Monster

It's baaaack.

The return of the Toy Monster.

I have battled this bully for years.

Every time I defeat him, he finds a new way in.

Sneaky little guy he is.

Does anyone else have toys who breed themselves and multiply during the wee hours of the night? They are like gremlins.

Even though I have purged gobs of useless toys and kept what seemed like very minimal, I have quickly come to realize as I stare at the millions of legos and tinkertoys littering my floor that we still have way too much.

And with Christmas right around the corner, I really want it all in order and minimalized to the minimum of minimums.

Say that 3 times fast.

Ha.

That will be a challenge.

The purging I mean.

Although saying "minimalized to the minimum of minimums" is a challenge of it's own.

Let's see if I have the energy to gain victory in this one last war of said villain.

Prepare to die Toy Monster!

Or at least...go far far away to the Goodwill to attack someone else's playroom.

Who's with me?

Sometimes when I grab my All-In-One diapers, it makes me wonder why I ever loved pockets so much.

No stuffing.

No pinning.

Just pull it out off the dryer and put it on your baby.

Recently, ClothDiaper.com introduced me to yet another awesome AIO, when they gave me the chance to review the OsoCozy cloth diaper.

I received the Unbleached Cotton Birdseye Weave in light green. Made in the USA (yay!), with an amazing fit, I can see why these diapers are called OsoCOZY. :o)

Each diaper comes in two sizes. Size 1 (6-18 lbs), and size 2 which I tested (18-35 lbs.)

This diaper fits wonderfully! Despite the fact that it is super duper trim and not bulky like some all-in-one's are in the least, it has a much roomier fit and a higher rise then many. And with my high waisted children, that is a definite plus in my book.

And the large hook and loop closures that can overlap, make it very adjustable in size range.

The outer PUL layer keeps everything waterproof, and the elastic in back as well as on the legs is perfectly snug to hold in messes.

Trust me...Thomas Jackson has thoroughly tested that feature out today. :oP

I love the unbleached cotton birdseye weave. Although the interior isn't quite as soft and fluffy as some of the other diaper names out there, it is super thirsty and holds up very well, getting softer the more it's used.

They also offer a bleached version of the OsoCozy, which is 100% cotton gauze. Of course my preference is the unbleached for a more natural fiber. But both diapers retail for just $14.95 each!

In the end, if you want a great diaper that is super simple to use, a fabulous price, and as classic as they come, OsoCozy AIO is the perfect diaper to give a shot! Trust me, you'll love it!

Green Beans In The Garden

Well, despite the fact that green beans are most certainly NOT in the garden with the 30 degree weather outside right now, I still had to share this song.

Ya'll may know the West Girls from their video series Homestead Blessings, where they share their simple life and love for homesteading as they teach the down-home basics.

Recently they released a spiffy new CD full of songs with their country style background.

Green Beans In The Garden is one of my favorite songs from the album.

Makes me long for a life of country simplicity.

And summer.

And as a side note....try not to be as jealous of them as I am.

Mommy Mondays: Why I Should Never Have Had Children (Let Alone 6!)

The world is always telling us how children aren't as important as so many other things in life.

Such as, oh you know, sitting on your doopa and reading romance novels.

"You should wait until you're ready....until this and that fall into place."

"You have a boy and a girl..perfect, now you can be done!"

And don't even get me started on all the flack us mother's with multiple children receive on our routine outings.

Seriously, do we have toilet paper hanging from the back of our skirts? Must people stare at us with such shock?

After hearing all of the sad sad reasons people give as to why they shouldn't have children, let alone more then two, I started to think. And I have to say, I agree with them.

I should have never had children, let alone 6!

Why?

Well, here goes.

I am not very good with children.
I am a really boring person.

I don’t know how to do anything fun.

I’m not athletic. (I am the mom who will sit and crochet while watching her children kick the ball around the yard...I rarely join in.)
I don’t know how to keep a tidy home for longer then 10 minutes.
I am a procrastinator.

I have am sooooo impatient.

I am grumpy. (See impatient)

I am extremely negative...the glass is only half full ya' know!
I am a complainer. (See impatient)
I enjoy my alone time way too much.

I'm a lousy teacher.
I hate to be interrupted or inconvenienced. (See impatient)

Good Lord! Why in the world did I ever think it was a good idea to have a big family?!

Oh wait.

This is why:

Because God called us to.

Because 8 precious souls have been added to our family over the years. We are privileged to raise 6 (so far!) of those blessings here on Earth for the glory of God.

Despite my shortcomings, God has entrusted these children to me and my husband, not only for their good and His accomplished will, but to shape me.

Those little ones bend and mold me daily into the image of Christ, way more then I think I can ever shape them.

I guide them the best that I can, but meanwhile, they are the ones God has chosen to lead me down the path of Christ.

They have taught me selflessness, and love.

And even though I struggle daily to conquer all of the shortcomings I have listed, not to mention a million more, I know I am accepting the blessings He has given me with an open heart...and slowly becoming the woman of God He has called me to be.

I can't raise 6 children.

I can't even raise one.

Guess what? Neither can you.

But God can.

If He gives them, He will provide.
And He will raise them right along with you.

With Him, all things are possible.

Some Changes 'Round Here

Thought I'd share with you a few exciting changes around here.

You might of already noticed them, but if not, this post is for you.

First and most exciting?

Well now, it just so happens to be my very own address!

The old blogspot address will automatically redirect you to here, but go ahead and change your bookmarks!

Second off....for those of you who enter my giveaways, you've probably already noticed I am now using Rafflecopter to collect entries instead of just comments.

It is so much easier to use, for both me and you!

If you are a bit confused as to how it all works, I'll give you the run down.
I'd hate for you to miss any giveaway goodness because you were confused!

The top of the form gives you the following information:

How many Days that are Left in the Giveaway.

The middle of the form is full of tasks that you can accomplish to earn Entries into the giveaway. I think I have just found my all-time favorite book ever for young boys!

My boys love adventure. Pirates rank right up there with knights and dragons. So His Might Warrior: A Treasure Map From Your King was certainly a winner in our household with 5 little men!
This gorgeous hardcover book, written on 128 pages meant to look like vintage maps, and full of illustration of young sailors and ships, has every page filled with "letters from God" to help guide them on their voyage through life. Each letter is accompanied by the scripture it was taken from and a short prayerful lesson.

I am absolutely thrilled with this book! It is exactly the kind of faith filled and glorifying encouragement any growing boy needs. Even I was brought to tears with the love and sentiment behind the words written to these young men. Sheri Rose Shepherd knew exactly how to touch hearts and minds!

With topics covered such as courage, respect, honor, fighting the good fight, being noble with money, truthfulness, and so much more, it is filled with biblical advice for your adventure loving littles.
